Raija Mills - Art Portfolio

Visual Art has always and will be part of my practice. Both traditional and digital, art is subjective because it is an expression of an individual's perspective. Everyone sees things differently, and I have a vast imagination when it comes to that. I never started out great with drawing, especially drawing in proportion and perspective. Over time though, I continued to practice every day until I started to notice a difference. Watching animated movies, shows and observing everything around me has helped me through this, as well as learning about it in my Animation degree.

My art process differs depending on what kind of artwork I'm working on. When it comes to environment design, I usually sketch out the perspective that I want to work in an art journal so I can understand the composition better. I figure out where to place any props and if there are going to be any characters in the mix as well. When it comes to character design though, my process goes a little bit different. Majority of the ones I have done are based on original drawings I did in my early days of high school, which back then they were not great quality. For ones that are entirely original, I always sketch it in an art journal first, take a photo of it and open it up in a drawing program. From there I digitise it as I have free reign over the design. I find I have a unique imagination as I draw more fantasy-based creatures and some human ones as well.
